Earth Day

Earth Day is held annually during the spring to inspire awareness and appreciation for the earth's environment. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, a tradition founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969. A 2nd annual Earth Day on April 22 was founded in 1970 by U.S. Senator Nelson to celebrate environmental teaching.

Acton celebrates Earth Day each year. Bring your family and join Acton PIP and many local groups and organizations to join the celebration. The Earth Day Festival, sponsored by St. Matthew's Church and Acton Citizens for Environmental Safety (ACES), is held at St. Matthew's Church (Central Street) in Acton. Free admission and activities, food, music, door prizes and more. Check out a hybrid car, find out about local water testing, learn how to design a greenhouse, conduct energy check-ups for your home, see a solar panel, or sign up for the rail trail. A show by Animal Adventures of Bolton takes place each year. All ages enjoy Earth Day.

Green Acton

On June 9, 2008, the Acton Board of Selectmen asked a group of citizens to form an advisory team to help the town with environmental issues and projects. The Green Acton team is investigating the EPA Energy Challenge, an opportunity for municipalities across New England to identify simple and cost-effective measures that increase energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. Every community that participates in this program can receive EPA assistance in their efforts, and the payoffs for participating can be big.

New England has one of the highest energy costs in the country. A typical town of 25,000 spends more than $1 million annually on electricity and heating fuel for public buildings. EPA estimates that as much as 30 percent of the energy used in such buildings might be wasted. New England's 1,500 cities, towns and associated school districts together spend almost $1 billion every year on energy for buildings. Their 4,500 public K-12 schools spend more than $500 million on energy–more than on textbooks and computers combined.
