STEM Discovery Fest

The PIP Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Discovery Fest for grades 7-12 is a reverse science fair for students, parents, and community members interested in "real world" STEM applications and career connections. Students in grades 7 to 12 are invited to work at the STEM Discovery Fest to learn from professionals in the field of math, science, and technology and learn firsthand about careers. Working at the STEM Discovery Fest also earns community service hours and 990 credit hours for ABRHS students. Contact PIP for more info. Don't miss next year's STEM Discovery Fest and a chance for students to win free area science passes and prizes! Learn about PIP's mission of increasing community involvement in STEM education and PIP volunteering.

The 2007 PIP STEM Discovery Fest (formerly known as Sci-Tech Fest) featured many new interactive and hands-on exhibits from participants including: the ABRHS InvenTeam (award winning invention sponsored in part by CISCO Systems), Acton Family Dental (welcome Dr. Yao!), Acton's Solar panel project (see how the Leary scoreboard is solar powered!), BAE systems (Infrared night camera), the new Worker's Credit Union (WCU) bank at ABRHS, Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) (latest hiking technology), the LWV Environmental Team (energy saving light bulb demo), One Laptop per Child (OLPC) as seen on 60 Minutes!, SkidSchool (on the physics of driving safety) and more!

Career Workshop in Engineering

Acton PIP and Acton-Boxborough Regional High School sponsor the MIT student engineering workshops at ABRHS. The goal of the workshops, led by MIT engineering students, is to answer the question, What is Engineering? then present an overview of engineering disciplines, and explain why engineering is a rewarding career. Presenters facilitate a hands-on activity using engineering concepts and share their experiences as engineering students.

PIP was pleased to offer the MIT student engineering workshops locally through an IBM Community Volunteer Grant. Although the workshops are open to girls and boys, they are sponsored in part by the MIT Women in Engineering (WIE) Initiative.
